Traditional craft skills. Definition of tradition is related to the verb traduce – ‘to tread a path’. The next generation tread the path of those who go before. Tradition is not about following rules but following a thread, interpreting rules, resolving old mistakes, inventing new approaches, making the craft contemporary but with previous generations’ books on the shelf so as not to reinvent the wheel.
Looking back on summer 2013. A training day with Ty Mawr for the Blaenavon World Heritage Environment Group
Up on the Blaenavon mountain next to a pit shaft is a site of workers cottages. The group were consolidating the remains of the structures after archeology had completed. Theyp needed to rebuild the stone structures for integrity and using correct (original) masonry methods deduced from the remains and using lime where appropriate. In the background is Ty Mawr’s portable lime mill.
